27 Lakh tourists coming to Goa -
By 2021, the number of tourists coming to Goa is expected
to double and over 27 lakh tourists are expected to
visit the state annually. According to projections prepared
by a private consultant for the Goa tourism master plan
for the next 25 years, around 9.76 lakh foreign tourists,
four times the present number of arrivals, and around
17.33 lakhs domestic tourists wiil double the present
figure. What's interesting to see is how the infrastucture
will be improved to meet this...
Loud Speakers controversy - Should there be music in Goa after
10:00 P.M. This is the burning issue today. But the funny thing about the High Court
ruling is that it applies to even those discos that are miles away from anyone
getting disturbed. This is bad news indeed for tourism in Goa.

Goa's
first International Airport - At last Goa will
have it's own. Mopa International Airport, as the
new airport will be called, will be built
on Mopa Plateau, in the northern most taluka of
Goa, Pernem. The construction would take over five
years and cost approx 11.5 Billion rupees.
The project would be a joint venture with the state,
central and private parties as partners. This airport
once completed would help to greatly increase the
number of direct international flights to Goa. Currently
the Indian Navy allows restricted use of Dabolim
airport for civilian purposes.

Famous Goan Kudds in Mumbai on the verge of extinction (Herald, May 11th , 2000)
The" Kudds " , or village clubs played a crucial role in the history of Goan
emigration. Towards the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the
nineteenth century, our ancestors in their wisdom and philanthropic thinking founded
clubs known as Kudds as they are called in the venacular language, Konkanni . These
institutions provided low cost accommodation and friendly mentors from among one's fellow
villagers. Thus you have Calangute kudd, Navelim kudd and so on. These Kudds exist
in almost every village of Goa till date and abroad. In Mumbai, particularly they were
frequented by those who went to Mumbai for medical treatment and others who went to study
or work in Mumbai. The prestigious Jer Mahal in the centre of Dhobitalao, is
popularly known as a "mini Goa" and is full of Goan Kudds.
But today, as quoted from Goa's popular daily newspaper, Herald,
"with allegations of suspicious deals by some of those in charge, and pressure from
land sharks, these institutions face a bleak future ". Will these clubs become a
thing of the past like many other good things ?
